Playing billiards can be a relaxing way to wind down after a busy day. There is no one way to play billiards. Billiards refers to a number of different games, however they are all played on a rectangular table covered in green cloth (known as a pool table) using a cue stick and a set of balls in a variety of colours. Billiards can be played one-on-one or in teams of two. There are two main kinds of billiards: Carom and pocket. Straight billiards, balkline billiards, and three-cushion billiards can all be classified as Carom billiards. Straight pool, one pocket, bank pool, snooker, nine ball, and eight ball are considered pocket billiards.
Eight ball is easily the most popular billiards game. In eight ball, there are 16 balls. One of these balls, called the cue ball, is white. The rest of the balls are a variety of colours. They are numbered 1 through 15 and are either solid or striped. To start, all of the balls except the cue ball are racked in the form of a triangle. A player will “break” the rack using the cue ball to hit it. The first ball to go into a pocket will determine whether the player who just hit will be playing solids or stripes. For instance, if the player broke the rack and a striped ball went in the pocket, that player would be trying to get the rest of the striped balls in for the rest of the game. A player must sink all of his or her balls and then the “8 ball” without pocketing the cue ball in order to win the game.
